Artist Statement
Kelsey is a San Francisco-based ceramicist and mixed media painter, working primarily in oils and acrylics. She challenges the conventional boundaries of the canvas through her use of repetitive background and composition-cropping frames. The golden adornments in her work serve as both a metaphorical portal, depicting future or imagined scenes, or a literal frame, encapsulating imagery drawn from memory or the past. She is curious about how the environment shapes and influences human behavior, as well as the ways in which we interact with the spaces around us. Her compositions often play with the placement of subjects in the foreground and background, emphasizing the contrast between the human figure and the overwhelming beauty and all-encompassing nature of the world. In her work, humans are often depicted as cropped, anonymous, or diminished, subtly reflecting the tension between individuality and the vastness of the environment.
